U.S. recall statistics

Recalls per year by agency, severity, and hazard - computed from the full official databases.

Counts are recall events (FDA product entries grouped by event ID), from the full databases mirrored nightly: openFDA enforcement (2012+), USDA-FSIS (2014+, English notices), CPSC (2000+), NHTSA (2010+). Click a year for the detailed breakdown. Monthly charts end at the last complete month, and agencies backfill their feeds, so the newest months can still rise in later updates. Why published recall counts disagree

"How many food recalls were there last year?" gets different answers from different sources, and all of them can be right about their own metric. Counts differ because sources count different things: FDA enforcement events (what this site counts - FDA-classified recalls grouped by event, weeks after they start), FDA press announcements (company announcements FDA posts; many recalls never get one), per-product entries (one event can span dozens of products - counting rows can triple the number), and fiscal vs calendar years (FDA's own dashboard uses October–September fiscal years). USDA-FSIS is a separate system on top of that, and its public-health alerts are not technically recalls. When citing this site, say "FDA food enforcement events, grouped by recall event, calendar year" - the number is reproducible from the CSV.
